Design Inspiration

Interior design trends going into 2017 are exciting and offer opportunities to update and refresh! We at Designs of the Interior see several opportunities:

Earthy Pastel Hues

Paint is so inexpensive, and can make an instant change!  Once again Pantone has correctly trend-spotted an emerging color scheme, with its choice of the ethereal, earthy shades of rose, blush and lavender.

Mixed Metals

We’re seeing brass and gold still, but also polished nickel and silver are still on trend.  White plaster is new in the mix, and is seen in light fixtures, beds and chairs.  We love the new Bernhardt collection, especially the Palma bed—they used white plaster in the entire collection and it feels so California chic.

Vintage Looks Made Modern

The burled wood of the art deco period, classic campaign furniture and mid-century modern are strong—we spotted one chair at Worlds Away inspired by a Pierre Jeanneret 1950’s office chair.

Fool-Proof Fabrics

We definitely see a trend in stain-resistant fabric in almost every collection.  Crypton [a stain-resistant fabric manufacturer] is available in many of our graded in upholstery collections, and we just did a Malibu home all in Perennials fabric. Our clients want their homes to be elegant and stunning but they also want them to be livable and family friendly.

Natural Texture

Natural texture in general is very attractive, and is seen in cane, rattan and wire brushing.  Case goods will be getting more texture by upholstering, lacquering or putting texture behind glass.  Kate Spade did that, with the front of a cabinet done with wallpaper behind glass.

Repurposed Pieces

What a wonderful opportunity to create interesting interior design, when one blends a mix between organic and contemporary. We recently created a dining table with a double pedestal of stainless steel, with a top made of a vertical slice of a parota tree—that top is a stunning sight, ranging in width between 40 – 44 “ wide, is 2 ¼” thick and is 120” long!  Our client especially loved the experience of choosing which slice she wanted to use, much like one would choose a piece of granite in the granite yard.
